Below are the solutions for the test on Electrochemistry. Make sure to also look at the balancing redox reactions problems on the previous post. You will be given a half cell reduction table and all of the rules for assigning oxidation numbers and balancing complex redox reactions.

Below are practice problems for balancing complex oxidation-reduction reactions. Problems 1-4 are only balancing problems, thus use the method that was introduced on part (c) of Balancing Redox Reactions worksheet. Problem #5 asks for a net voltage. You need to find half reactions that fit the products and reactants given in the equation. You will notice that no water or hydrogen ions are given. The correct half reactions will supply the waters and hydrogens needed for the entire redox reaction. One word of advice, like "species" on each side of the yield sign will factor each other out. The solutions to each problem are given at the end of the blog entry. Try the problems before you look at the solutions.
Below is the key for the redox problems.

Below are the solutions to the packet on naming and writing compounds. Tomorrow you will be taking the diagnostic quiz on naming chemical compounds and writing chemical formulas. As you were told last week, you need to read Chapter 5. If you feel that you need more practice with naming and writing formula, you can choose problems that are given in the Chapter 4 and 5 Cumulative Review. I would suggest problems 26 through 31 on page 151. The answers to the problems can be found in the back of the book on page A38. All the information on how to write formulas and name compounds has been given to you. It is now your job to practice those skills until you are highly proficient. Come and see me if you need any help.

Below are the solutions to the Writing Ionic Compound Formulas worksheet. The second page with polyatomic ions, part of the last column was cut off. If you have any questions, I can show that in class. Also, there is a partial key to the packet given out on Friday. Remember, on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, there will be a diagnostic quiz that will go in your homework category on naming compounds and writing chemical formulas. On Friday, Nov. 6th, there will be a quiz that will go in your assessment category for naming compounds and writing chemical formulas. Before you try to write a formula or a name of a compound, you must first classify which type of compound you have.

Homework for the last two days is as follows:
Wednesday, 10/7 - Read pages 91 through 98. On pages 117 and 118, do problems 38, 40, and 42.
Homework for today is to finish the Average Atomic Mass worksheet and Atomic Structure worksheet.
Tomorrow (Friday, 10/9) we will be performing the "Isotopes of Pennium" Lab.

I was at home sick today, but the test is still tomorrow. You received the review packet in class today and the solutions / answers are posted below. All the major concepts are covered by the review packet. You will not see the exact questions on the test that you see on the review packet. The intent of the packet is to give you a sample of the possible questions you may see on the exam. If you understand the core concepts of the unit, you can answer all questions that have a major concept from the chapter as a theme. I will be monitoring the blog periodically tonight, so leave a question if you have one. Either I or someone else can answer your question. I will be at school around 6:45 tomorrow morning if you have any questions. Remember, tomorrow is Academic Thursday in Advisory, so come and see me during advisory if you have any questions. Study hard.

The solutions to questions #6 and #8 are posted below. There is correction to the answers given on the back of the Calorimety worksheet. The answer shown for #2 is actually for #3 and the answer shown for #3 is actually for #2. You will receive a grade for completion of the worksheet, so please attempt all problems. Show some work even if you cannot finish a problem. Calorimetry will be a large portion of the exam this Thursday, October 1st, so take doing these type of problems and understanding the concepts very seriously.
